Philosophy of Education
According to me, you cannot just decide to be an educator; it is also a passion that grows from within. As far as I am concerned, I have always wanted to be an educator. Some of the teachers who taught me throughout my childhood had definite impact on the reasons for which I have chosen this career. I wanted to be just like them when I was younger. Now, I mostly want to have the same impact on children as they had on me. I now have enough experience to begin to create my own philosophy of education. There are three main points that create it: concern for students, promotion of happiness, and encouragement of personal growth. I will now develop on upon these points.
First of all, I believe that a teacher must demonstrate concern for her/his students’ welfare. In order to do that, I think that the educator has to build a strong relationship with her/his students and show them that he/she cares about them deeply. If the students sense that they are cared for, they will feel that they belong in the classroom. They will also want to be in the teacher’s presence, they will look up to him/her.
Secondly, I think that a teacher must promote happiness in her classroom by making learning an enjoyable adventure. The students must not see learning and school as something that is horrible. To promote happiness, the teacher must exhibit enthusiasm herself when he/she is teaching. He/She also needs to be flexible in order to best meet the students’ various needs. If a lesson is too difficult or too simple for some students it is harder for them to enjoy what they are learning. Another situation is that if the subject the learners are being taught does not interest them, they will be inattentive. In these moments, the teacher must be able to adapt and make modifications to the way that she/he is teaching to make sure that the learning is effective and interesting for the students.
Lastly, I believe that encouraging personal growth is necessary in the school environment; the teacher must establish a supportive and respectful community in the class. One way of promoting such an environment is by praising and recognizing a good and positive behavior. Promoting such forms of behavior at a young age allows the possibility of preventing bad behaviors from occurring in the present and in the future. Students must understand that in society there are rules that they must follow and that by disobeying them, they risk punishment. The teacher must also show her students that learning is a life-long experience and that it does not only happen in a classroom but all around us, every day of our life.
To conclude, many components need to be present in order to create a healthy classroom environment. The elements I mentioned are the ones that I believe should be prioritized according the knowledge I have about education thus far. As I gain experiences, my philosophy of education will become clearer and help me to become the best possible teacher I may be.
